From Student to Professional Hult Blog
A couple of weeks ago, I did not remind my students that an assignment was due. Until then, that was never the kind of professor I wanted to be. But I have changed. After years of working with busy, stressed out MBAs, I know that many are likely to forget deadlines. Out of fairness to those who do observe them, I strictly enforce those deadlines. But rather than alienate half the class with a zero on an assignment, I have become accustomed to sending out reminders ââ¬â often. The other day, I did not do that. I admit that I am dreading the drop in student satisfaction ratings that are likely to come my way. In my defense, I am following the advice of some of my studentsââ¬â¢ future employers. I could ignore them, but the whole purpose of interviewing 100 business leaders around the world was to spur improvement back on campus. I believe I have to try to take the advice that Iââ¬â¢ve been given. What business leaders told me (sometimes it felt more like a trip to the woodshed) is that we business educators donââ¬â¢t give much thought to cramming our charges into a student mold. Upon graduation, though, employersà expect students to have broken out of that student mindset and immediately adopt a managerial one. Employers end up having to un-train graduates before they can do the work of managers. One CEO told me, ââ¬Å"As it is right now, I feel like we have to ââ¬Ëblunt themââ¬â¢ on stupid projects for the first four or five years before they can do higher-level things.â⬠Over and over again, I heard the explicit or implied refrain: ââ¬Å"They have been students (or very young employees) their whole lives; canââ¬â¢t you do more to help turn them into professionals?â⬠That frequent request moved me to completely redesign my courses ââ¬â and the way I think about education. I know there is a theory that good education is all about very clear standards for giving grades. One of the top-performing business professors in the world brags about a nearly 20-page syllabus for his courses and counsels other professors to make sure there are no surprises in the classroom. And heââ¬â¢s right ââ¬â that is a proven path to top satisfaction ratings from students. But in an era where all companies are grappling with a world high in uncertainty and ambiguity, it is really no surprise that employers continue to ask business educators to better prepare students to face the reality of a messy and unpredictable world after graduation. I am sure that the business leaders I interviewed meant much more than just ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t remind students about due dates.â⬠But my recent deadline dilemma was a pregnant reminder of how difficult it will be for me to curb my natural knee-jerk inclinations after many years of teaching. Itââ¬â¢s my desire to inspire successful business leaders for the future; however, implementing that goal has steered me ââ¬â and hopefully my students ââ¬â in a very new direction. The Contribution Of Karl Marx Essay - 1337 Words
This essay considers the contribution of Karl Marx to the study of sociology, throughout this essay I will be discussing what Marxism is, how Marxism has affected todayââ¬â¢s society as well as academics that did not agree with Marxââ¬â¢s theories. Marxism is the social and economic system based on the theories of Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels. Karl Marx was born in Trier, Germany in 1818, Marx studied law and Berlin University but later changed to philosophy until finally perusing his interest in journalism. When Marx finished his studies he began writing for a left-winged newspaper, the Rhensig Gazette (Rheinishe Zeitung) where they would publish his articles almost every week. Marx soon became the editor in 1942 however the newspaper closed soon after due to new censorship laws in Germany. In 1983 Marx and his wife Jenny moved to Paris where Marx thought he would be able to express himself more freely without the fear of being judged or censored, like he was back in Germany. However, this was not the case as he ended up in London due to being chased out of several countries due to people thinking he was a dangerous man due to his political views and writings Marx met his lifetime best friend in Germany, Freidrich Engels, who would soon go on to assist Marx with his writings. They would both soon become increasingly influ ential with sociologists. ââ¬Å"Marxââ¬â¢s impact can only be compared with that of religious figures like Jesus or Muhammadâ⬠(1). Sarahs Key by Tatiana De Rosnay - 763 Words
Generally, when innocence is thought of, the first speculation recalled to oneââ¬â¢s mind is the thought of pureness and the idea that the specific individual is free from moral wrong. On the other end of the spectrum is the term known as guilt. Guilt is the emotional notion in which one feels that they have compromised his or her own standards in a negative way. In the novel Sarahââ¬â¢s Key, Sarah frequently proves to struggle with both guilt and innocence. These specific themes are put on display when Sarah realizes she is not going back home, the scenario in which Sarah boards the cattle car to the camps, and the tragic event in which Sarah takes her own life. Innocence first proclaims itself when Sarah discovers that she is not returning home. Sarahââ¬â¢s behaviour and lack of understanding towards pressing information is a portrayal of how she has been raised to be quite naà ¯ve. These preceding traits are revealed when Sarah explains to her brother, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll come back for you later. I promise.â⬠(9). Here, Sarah proves her innocent nature as a result of being raised by her parents in an exceedingly structured way. Guilt emanates into Sarahââ¬â¢s moral conscience when her father confesses that ââ¬Å"we are not going back. They wonââ¬â¢t let us back.â⬠(23). Furthermore, Sarahââ¬â¢s sheltered upbringing is proved to be true when she smiles at a boy during the roundup and he looks back at her like sheââ¬â¢s crazy. Mental Illness Paper free essay sample
A child with ASD may appear to develop normally and then withdraw and become indifferent to social engagement. Children with an ASD may fail to respond to their names and often avoid eye contact with other people. They have difficulty interpreting what others are thinking or feeling because they canââ¬â¢t understand social cues, such as tone of voice or facial expressions, and donââ¬â¢t watch other peopleââ¬â¢s faces for clues about appropriate behavior. They lack empathy. Many children with an ASD engage in repetitive movements such as rocking and twirling, or in self-abusive behavior such as biting or head-banging. They also tend to start speaking later than other children and may refer to themselves by name instead of ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠or ââ¬Å"me. â⬠Children with an ASD donââ¬â¢t know how to play interactively with other children. Some speak in a sing-song voice about a narrow range of favorite topics, with little regard for the interests of the person to whom they are speaking. Children with characteristics of an ASD may have co-occurring conditions, including Fragile X syndrome (which causes mental retardation), tuberous sclerosis, epileptic seizures, Tourette syndrome, learning disabilities, and attention deficit disorder. About 20 to 30 percent of children with an ASD develop epilepsy by the time they reach adulthood. ASD varies widely in severity and symptoms and may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected children or when it is masked by more debilitating handicaps. Very early indicators that require evaluation by an expert include: * no babbling or pointing by age 1 * no single words by 16 months or two-word phrases by age 2 * no response to name * loss of language or social skills * poor eye contact * excessive lining up of toys or objects * no smiling or social responsiveness. Later indicators include: * impaired ability to make friends with peers * impaired ability to initiate or sustain a conversation with others * absence or impairment of imaginative and social play * stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language * restricted patterns of interest that are abnormal in intensity or focus * preoccupation with certain objects or subjects * inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals. Health care providers will often use a questionnaire or other screening instrument to gather information about a childââ¬â¢s development and behavior. Some screening instruments rely solely on parent observations, while others rely on a combination of parent and doctor observations. If screening instruments indicate the possibility of an ASD, a more comprehensive evaluation is usually indicated. A comprehensive evaluation requires a multidisciplinary team, including a psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist, and other professionals who diagnose children with ASDs. The team members will conduct a thorough neurological assessment and in-depth cognitive and language testing. Because hearing problems can cause behaviors that could be mistaken for an ASD, children with delayed speech development should also have their hearing tested. Scientists arenââ¬â¢t certain about what causes ASD, but itââ¬â¢s likely that both genetics and environment play a role. Researchers have identified a number of genes associated with the disorder. Studies of people with ASD have found irregularities in several regions of the brain. Other studies suggest that people with ASD have abnormal levels of serotonin or other neurotransmitters in the brain. These abnormalities suggest that ASD could result from the disruption of normal brain development early in fetal development caused by defects in genes that control brain growth and that regulate how brain cells communicate with each other, possibly due to the influence of environmental factors on gene function. While these findings are intriguing, they are preliminary and require further study. The theory that parental practices are responsible for ASD has long been disproved. There is no cure for ASDs. Therapies and behavioral interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement. The ideal treatment plan coordinates therapies and interventions that meet the specific needs of individual children. Most health care professionals agree that the earlier the intervention, the better. Educational/behavioral interventions: Therapists use highly structured and intensive skill-oriented training sessions to help children develop social and language skills, such as Applied Behavioral Analysis. Family counseling for the parents and siblings of children with an ASD often helps families cope with the particular challenges of living with a child with an ASD. Medications: Doctors may prescribe medications for treatment of specific autism-related symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Antipsychotic medications are used to treat severe behavioral problems. Seizures can be treated with one or more anticonvulsant drugs. Medication used to treat people with attention deficit disorder can be used effectively to help decrease impulsivity and hyperactivity.
